Suga Tasters, Tennyson and Ashleigh Arnold enjoy a Michelin Star Dish in Singapore!

The Arnolds have been married for 6 years. Tennyson proposed to Ashleigh in flight, so how appropriate that their anniversary celebrations usually take them on a trip to see more of the world. This September, they chose Singapore, Bali and Vietnam.

At home in Kingston, Jamaica, they enjoy eating casually at Uncorked and for special occasions, The Terrace at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston and The Sugar Mill Restaurant in Montego Bay.

Suga has had the pleasure of being out with the A-Team and can tell you that these foodies have an insatiable love for all cuisines and they always have room for Dessert!

Suga Taster, Ashleigh Arnold’s Rating for Hawker Chan, China Town, Singapore

Date and time of visit: September 27, 2019 @ 2pm
No. of diners: 2 adults

Hawker Chan gets an overall Value for $ rating of 4/5.

IMG-20191011-WA0050.jpg

Hawker Chan is in the China Town Food Centre in Singapore and serves as a feature of Singapore’s culinary offerings and culture. It can be regarded as a walk-in fast food restaurant and was awarded by Singapore’s Best Foods in 2017. Their primary concern seems to be getting as many plates out as quickly as possible, given the long lines versus Décor, Professional Service, Cleanliness and Comfort.

Suga Taster, Ashleigh’s Breakdown!

Hawker Chan, formally known as Liao Fan Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken and Noodle, is the world’s first Hawker to be awarded a Michelin Star! It is located in the China Town Food Centre, China Town, Singapore. The dish for which they were awarded a Michelin Star is the Singapore favourite, Chicken and Rice, which, though simple, is exceptionally flavourful. It stands out as one of the most tender pieces of chicken we have ever eaten. This is a must try while in Singapore, where every savoury bite is worth the long cues that one has to endure for a US$8 meal!

Suga Taster, Taraja’s Breakdown!

Nestled in the hills of Fairfield, Montego Bay, Chef Robert Joseph’s Bellefield Restaurant and Bar at Bellefield Great House was a pleasant lunch time surprise. They had a wide selection of items on their menu, however the group chose to select from the lunch time special menu, which was reasonably priced at $1000JMD per person to include a small Soup of choice and an Entree.

The service was excellent. We were greeted at the entrance and seated immediately. The server was courteous and highlighted all the specials for the day. I selected the Vegetarian Pumpkin Soup topped with roasted coconut shavings, which boosted the flavour of the soup. It was quite tasty.

The Entree did not arrive right away, but the group was distracted by basking in the pleasant ambience of the estate. We had Island Style Fried Chicken served with rice and peas and roasted vegetables. Other options were Chicken Penne Pesto, Whole Red Snapper with fries and Jerk Grilled Chicken with rice and peas/Baked Potato.

The portions were adequate and the Chicken was fried crispy to perfection with a delicious Bbq sauce on the side.

Bellefield Restaurant is in the Savoury Category ($2800JMD) for Restaurant week that starts today and ends on November 17! Give them a try!

Highlights from GW Art’s Collection last Saturday!

20191003_051158.jpg

GW Art’s Collection was held in the Rio Bueno Suite of the Jamaica Pegasus last week Saturday evening. The weather held up and a few persons even came out within the first hour of the show, but the majority filtered in from 6pm onwards.

Guests appreciated the colours and textures used by the artist, as well as the variety of pieces on display. The Collection definitely represented GW Art’s motto that ‘GW Art is for Everyone’.

Acrylic on canvas was the main medium used for wall paintings, big and small, framed and unframed.

Homey pieces greeted guests on the way in, followed by a wall of nature.

The standout piece for the night, ‘Connected’ showed depth and good technique from the artist.

‘Connected’ had quite a bit of representation for 1 piece and the artist ensured her perspective for it was expressed in her Lookbook, which ended up being passed around by guests with much excitement. The Lookbook included a chronological order of pieces from the current and previous collections with a bit about the artist, her perspective on each piece and how GW Art began. The Lookbook was dedicated to the artist’s late father and past West Indies Cricketer, Basil (Shotgun) Williams. Gabrielle plans on updating this lookbook as more pieces are created.

There were a few wooden signs and pieces on a grid wall panel display, courtesy of Miracle Corporation Ltd., that caught the eyes of many. These pieces showed the trendy side of GW Art and ‘Blessed’ was a favourite, with replicas ordered throughout the night.

20191003_050937.png

Amongst the smaller paintings, ‘Our Doctor Bird’ was another favourite, with light brush strokes. The piece was inspired by the artist’s outing to Cafe Eits one morning for breakfast, where  the hummingbirds would often come and go to their trees on property in the midst of a calm and cool ambience.

‘Figure 8’ and ‘Foreplay’ were quite a hit with the men.

Throughout the night, guests mingled and contemplated which pieces they should walk away with for the night.

With GW Art, it’s always wine o’clock, so wine was complimentary to guests complemented by what was on offer from the 3 selected, local artisans. Gabrielle Burgess of Suga Lifestyle, under which GW Art falls, knew that Jamaican made cheeses from Outland Hurders Creamery & Farmstead, Homemade Jams and Pepper Jellies from Chorlavi’s, along with bean to bar 71% dark Chocolate from One One Cacao would not only pair well with the Wine and Prosecco offered, but pair well amongst each other as well.

The artisans were pleasantly surprised, realising this during the event and were seen purchasing from each other. This is what Suga Lifestyle and embracing Brand Jamaica is all about!
