In the Streets Fast Food Update

Apologies to the Fitness junkies, but this is an update for the carb loaders, those who are maintaining their awesome weight so they can afford that 1 cheat day of the week and for the parents feeding kids who are fortunate to have such fast metabolisms.

The people have spoken. It seems Jamaica is finally moving away from ‘KFC’ country. After Taco Bell and so many other franchises have come and gone and only one location of Popeyes was left open, a new location of Popeyes is now open!

Words of the people:

‘Wi tiyad of KFC undacooked chicken. Popeyes taste betta n dem cook dem chicken. Di new place ram!’

Speaking of new locations or fast food joints popping up, the new Pizza place, Pizza Please is now open for the New Year in Village Plaza. Suga went to try it out last Saturday in the middle of the day but looked and took a U-turn. I needed to sit down and eat. It was small, so limited seating available. Understandable but the AC was either not working or not on! So the place felt congested and uncomfortably hot. I love the concepy of what I saw though. We finally have a Pizza spot that offers more of a variety of toppings for pizzas such as eggplant, spinach and more. Similar to say a Whole Foods in the US. Personal pans, flatbreads, slices etc. were all laid out so you can see your options and they seemed ready to go once you said the word.

Suga will revisit one day.

Until then, finishing the week with healthy food. Look out for a health and fitness tip tomorrow! 🙂

Yes, unlimited sides meaning you are not charged for sides! Sides include Potatoes, Mushrooms, Sour cream, Onion, Fries, Corn on the cob and more. Also, imagine, word is they marinate from Monday!

If you did not call in your order you may have a long 35-45 minute wait, so ensure you have some lively company capable of good conversation.

Everything costs under $2000JMD so get going and make your plans tonight for Grill night at Medusa’s tomorrow. Remember seating is limited.

Break the Monotony and Keep Changing the Ingredients of your Salads

Trying to lose weight from the holidays and getting bored with salads? Mix it up a little. Try the following but also take into account the portions of each food group used. For instance, if you are keeping a low or no sugar diet, you may not want to have chopped mangoes or raisins. But still check the following ingredients out:-

Keep it leafy with lettuce, spinach, arugula, asparagus or string beans.

Add some flavour to your greens with a fat-free or low-fat vinaigrette or lime juice.

Add some healthy protein like tuna, turkey, boiled eggs or boneless, skinless chicken breast.

Add some fibre with chickpeas or quinoa.

Make use of various kinds of nuts such as pecans, walnuts and almonds.

Make it colourful with strawberries, black olives, tomatoes, carrots, mango, cranberries, beetroot, purple cabbage or corn.

Top it off with cheese! Grated parmesan or a sharp reduced-fat feta.

Experiment and see which ingredients work best with each other. Salads can be fun!

Tandoor! Spicy to the Core

Tandoor’s menu is filled with delicious, traditional Indian dishes. Probably too many though. There is even an Asian Fusian selection. Way too crammed and not easy on the eyes. Perhaps some images and more colour could be added for some enhancement. The waitress was polite and very attentive, however she could have assisted more with making suggestions from the menu. But with so many choices, could you blame her?

The ambience and decor need to be worked on majorly. The restaurant felt outdated and the colour scheme was mundane. The Indian show that was on the television by the bar on high volume wasn’t helping either. Where was the music channel?

There were only two other diners last Saturday night. This reminded me of my recent visit to Japanese Restaurant Cocoro. An indication that no matter how good and authentic the cuisine with decent service is, marketing and a revived ambience, thus giving a holistic dining experience, is important in such a competitive culinary atmosphere.

With that aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the Aloo Stuffed Paratha (Indian bread stuffed with potatoes – $295JMD) and Bhuna Gosht (Lamb pan roasted with garlic ginger tomato bell pepper & traditional spice – $1795JMD). The Bhuna Gosht was bursting with flavour and extremely spicy. Imagine I ordered medium spicy. The lamb was also roasted well, tender to the taste. Two thumbs up to the chef.

SuGa’s picks for Simple but Tasty (*$1850JMD) for Restaurant Week Jamaica!

The Tasty category is more on the simple side with dishes that most persons should be familiar with. A few restaurants still stand out in terms offering more value for money even though they do not have the greatest ambience.

ROE Japanese Cuisine, Tandoor Indian Restaurant and the Chill Out Hut Restaurant (Montego Bay) seem like great choices. Chill Out Hut will have Chicken Wings, Nachos, 1 lb whole Fish/Fish Fillet any way you like it, a Chicken and Ribs combo and more.

JoJo’s Jerk Pit and More usually offers a large serving of BBQ Spare Ribs, small desserts and basic appetizers.

East Japanese seems satisfactory with their usual Miso soup and Salads, simple Vanilla Ice Cream and main course including Shrimp Tempura and Teriyaki Chicken. However the choices at Northside Kitchen, aside from their location seem like more value for money. There is also a wider range of items to choose from.

The menu from Lillian’s at UTECH looks good with a variety of options. The quality of food is usually decent as well.

Pizza Hut – Dine In in Kingston and Montego Bay look like awesome Binge fests!

Tea Tree Crêperie

Nice atmosphere and good service. Keeping in mind Tea Tree makes everything from scratch, the Nacho Platter took too long to come out, so much so that the Crepes arrived two minutes after. We understood different persons were attending to the order, so there was a lack of communication since the person who made the Crepes probably thought the Nacho Platter was out some time before.  They apologised sincerely.

The Nacho Platter was alright. It could have had more crisp and had cheeses with more flavour. The popular Smoked Marlin Crepe was good. Nice flavour,  accentuated with the pepper jelly. The Crepe au Poulet with chicken breast, mushrooms, white wine dill sauce and mozzarella was bland though. The preferred option was the Calzone Crepe that had chicken breast, white wine tomato sauce layered with 4 cheeses, black olives etc. but they did not have the white wine tomato sauce.

The majority of Crepes range from $1400JMD to $1600JMD. There is an extremely wide range to choose from, whether you are feeling for something savoury or sweet, so you can choose something new every time. It’s a nice daytime spot to take the kids or have a chat with a friend or two.
