Affordable stop on a South Coast country run

Suga finally hit the South Coast a few weeks ago and stopped by Murray’s Fish & Jerk Hut.

You can get Steamed fish, Brown Stew fish, Fried fish, Curried Goat, Festival, Bammy and Soup on one side and on the other side you can get the usual Jerked Chicken and Pork and try their Jerked Rabbit!

I had Fish soup, Jerked Chicken and Jerked Rabbit. The food was decent and affordable. Service was quick too. None of the dishes costed over $1000JMD. Definitely value for money.

Remember Jabba’s Smoked Grill and Peppa Swims this Weekend!

Remember Lunch from Jabba’s Smoked Grill is available on Saturdays. Lunch costs $600JMD inclusive of delivery in the corporate area. You have a choice of either Jerked or Barbecue chicken along with sides of sweet potato, rice and peas and/or roast breadfruit.

Jabba’s Peppa Swims will also be available TODAY. They are mild or spicy packages of shrimps available on Tuesdays and Fridays at a cost of $280JMD each. You can get them delivered to you or pick up at 31-33 Trafalgar Road (BNS with no sign), opposite the NCB atrium, anytime between 8am and 5pm.

JoJo’s Jerk Pit and More’s Menu expands, Service improves but Quality still very very Regula

I have visited JoJo’s three times in the past month. Definitely not by choice but occasions arose. What can I say? Their menu has expanded! Wow. However, on a full night with live music, expect slow, poor service. Only order things that are on their grill, such as Jerk Chicken and Pork, the fastest of the slowest. That sums up the first visit.

The last two visits had a new but familiar face. Good old Glen that hops around from bar to bar, claiming its when they need service to speed up and improve he is called upon. I can see why, because there is usually a long wait at JoJo’s. Glen is slightly annoying in personality but humorous around the edges, confident and most importantly, usually serves efficiently. 

The last two visits included a half empty Tuesday night and a fairly full Saturday night with fast service for both nights from Glen and the kitchen. The food? The taste is ever so basic. Nothing special. Go there if you have to or you are just hungry and need some simple grub. What’s up with that Jerk Chicken Pizza?!!! Slices of thick hard dough bread with hardly enough ketchup or sauce, some tasteless cheese and bland chicken. Not even likkle oregano and pepper? Poor. 

Saltfish Fritters? Ok but too much batter.

Their Gungu Peas soup is nice and filling. 

The Cook up Saltfish ($350) could be spicier but it is quite tasty.

Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork with fries, rice and peas or sweet potato are usually reasonably tasty as well.

Their Philly Cheese Steak sandwich that has Chicken but not Steak is delicious.

Their prices? With the exception of that horrible excuse of a Pizza for $400JMD, prices are extremely affordable. Makes sense and aligns with the basic quality of food. Hopefully the fast service is maintained.

Waitresses step it up at Bamboo Blu, Mammee Bay

Since Suga’s review of Bamboo Blu last November, waitresses have definitely improved their service. Last Ash Wednesday was not only a Public Holiday but a Ship Day, with many tourists docking from their cruise. However, with a busy kitchen and bar, waitresses were pleasant and food and drinks arrived quickly.

There was nothing special about the Jerk Chicken, but their Jerk Chicken Wrap was quite tasty and spicy. It was all about the sauce. Their sweet potato mash was savoury as well, but their fries are way too oily.

Improvement appreciated though. Thanks as well to Pop-Up Gourmet for me being able to get a huge discount, making it easier for the waitress to get a good, well deserved tip.

YAAD FLAVA Barbecue Sauce, Ketchup and Jerk Seasoning at Sovereign Supermarket

Last Saturday, Yaad Flava representatives had persons flocking their booth to enjoy their Jerk chicken seasoned with their Jamaican Jerk Gourmet Blend topped off with their Ketchup or Barbecue sauce. The Ketchup had a spicy flavour that would give meats such as chicken, franks and burgers a unique flavour, if you didn’t want it to taste like traditional ketchup. Some persons add ketchup to everything, so mix it up a little. Now the Barbecue sauce was really peppery and would work well with anything you put on the grill. I was also surprised to hear that their well seasoned Jerk Chicken was only left for 5 minutes with their MSG free Jamaican Jerk Gourmet blend seasoning before cooking..

The packaging and labels looked official and calorie counts will be added at a later date according to the representatives. The products are reasonable, some about $600JMD and are all available at Sovereign Supermarket in Sovereign Centre on 106 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6.
