Hidden Spot for Jamaican and Vegetarian Cuisine Lunches!

Healthy Bites is located at a house in Trafalgar Park, close to NCB Atrium where you can pick up your Lunch.

Vegetarian meals such as Lentil Stew and General meals, typically of Jamaican cuisine such as Ackee and Saltfish, usually range in cost from $450-$650JMD. I love when places don’t drench your Ackee in oil. Healthy Bites is definitely a clean eating option. I am promoting healthy food today but if Fried Bammy is your choice for a side option, go for it.

The Menu varies each day and they offer large enough portions that are tasty.

You can customize your Lunch based on the sides you desire and they are open to suggestions. They are also considering Delivery.

Have you tried the Grilled Fish Wrap from Olive Cove Cafe?

Some time ago, it was being served with a Coconut cream sauce. The Chef is versatile and will make it healthier for you once possible. He substituted the creamy sauce with a tasty lemon sauce for me.

Suga’s Tip: If you have any left over Romesco, serve it on your morning whole wheat/grain toast with a boiled egg.

Instructions:

1. Prep the Cauliflower

Heat oven to 425°F.

Cut the Cauliflower into 1-inch florets, discarding any leaves or thick stalks.

Combine the Cauliflower, paprika and 2 tsp. Olive oil. Season with salt and pepper, then toss.

2. Roast the Chicken and Cauliflower

*Ensure you spread the Cauliflower in an even layer beside the Chicken on the sheet pan

Roast until the Chicken is cooked through, then transfer to a plate and rest.

Continue roasting the Cauliflower until browned and tender, perhaps for an additional 6-8 minutes.

Return Cauliflower to bowl where it was tossed to cool slightly.

3. Cut and Cook Scallions

Cut and cook Scallions into 1-inch lengths and cook until charred for 3-4 minutes, then transfer to a plate.

4. Finish Cauliflower

Add Scallion, Parsley and Olives to the roasted Cauliflower and stir to combine.

Add a bit more salt and pepper.

5. Serve

Add the green Romesco and top with the Chicken, then serve Cauliflower and remaining Romesco on the side.

ENJOY!

Suga’s Healthy Dinner at Kushite’s Vegetable Cuisine!

PhotoGrid_1496179021118.png

It has been a while now that Kushite’s Vegetable Cuisine has settled into their spacious location at Eden Gardens. From about 2 years ago, I enjoyed Lunch from them once in a while, which was delivered from their small establishment on Phoenix Avenue. I am happy I finally got to visit their location on Lady Musgrave Road with my husband a few weeks ago on Saturday, May 13th for Dinner.

As we stepped in, we were immediately impressed with the tasteful, detailed décor, no pun intended. I admired the art work and enjoyed the ambience and comfortable seating.

Our hostess, waitress and also co-principal of Kushites, Keisha McDonald, was pleasant and well informed as expected with regards to their menu.

Their Jerked Beet Pizza ($2500JmD) is a known pleaser, along with their Sicilian Pita Burger ($1800JMD) and Lentil Balls in Mexican Mole Sauce ($1900JMD).

We ordered a few minutes after 9pm and we had a visual of the Chef, Mr. Kush Tafari himself. We could see the food was prepared fresh and when it arrived in reasonable time after ordering, we could taste just that.

My husband enjoyed his tasty Callaloo and Mushroom in Tomato Cups paired with Quinoa. He had that with a refreshing glass of Lemon Grass Lemonade.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Sicilian Pita Burger that is a favourite at Kushites. Everything combined was a burst of flavour. The cilantro cream ‘cheese’ sauce definitely gave it a delicious kick of hot and spicy and was a perfect pair for the sweet potato Piri Piri chips. The taste buds then got a little chance to cool down with the black beans and were tickled with the taste of olives.

Both meals were healthy and filling. As a fitness enthusiast, I appreciated the creative use of the ‘Good Carbs’, such as the Sweet Potato used to make the Piri Piri chips, the Pita Bread that was either Whole Grain or Whole Wheat and the Quinoa. The Black Beans and Callaloo are also great sources of fibre. The Black Beans especially, though a protein, has slow-release carbs like other healthy beans. Then ofcourse, they were alongside veggies. What was missing for me? A little fruit. This void was fully satisfied with the Jackfruit Hemp smoothie that had even more Protein. The smoothie was well balanced, as the taste of the Jackfruit was not overpowering.

Last Thursday, Kushites won the Award for ‘Best Place for Vegetarian’ at the Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards and Suga definitely endorses them for that. Congrats to Kush Tafari, Keisha McDonald and the team!

Go and give Kushites a visit today and continue to have a healthy week!

Suga is Still Enjoying Lunch from The Olive Cove Cafe

Chicken in Wine Sauce with Spanish Brown rice ($720JMD incl. tax)

Last Tuesday, I revisited The Olive Cove Cafe for a heathy lunch and had their Chicken in Wine sauce with Spanish Brown rice and veggies.

The hostess was pleasant as usual and my lunch was waiting for me when I arrived at 12:45pm.

I got to speak with the personable Chef this time. I liked that he requested feedback and he is versatile with the menu.

Lunch was delish once again and I love that they will alter items on the menu if you would like a healthier option. #sugaendorsed

Post Carnival Health & Fitness Tips

Photo: Zimi Entertainment
Photo: Zimi Entertainment

Carnival is over but the body is quite ungrateful. Fitness by theory is reversible. Do not quit exercising all together and forego healthy nutrition. For those who got their carnival bodies (CBs) on point in time, maintenance is important. For those who were almost there, summer is just around the corner so keep at it. I am sure everyone relaxed last week, satisfying cravings and the gyms have been EMPTY.

Here are some tips for CB Maintenance:

– You do not have to exercise 5 or 6 times for the week now

– Exercise 3 or 4 times a week

– Eat 5 or 6 meals per day depending on hours (Include a snack two/three times; a snack is considered as a meal)

* Remember that a fruit is considered as a snack but avoid mangoes & watermelons as they have a high sugar content

– Eat a healthy Breakfast everyday

E.g. Oatmeal cereal, a Protein shake, a Boiled egg and slice of whole wheat toast

– Eat a healthy Lunch at least 5 or 6 days of the week

E.g. Steamed Fish and steamed vegetables, a Turkey sub-sandwich with whole grain/wheat bread, Baked Chicken with a finger of boiled banana and two pieces of yam with steamed vegetables etc.

– Have light, healthy Dinners

E.g. Chicken soup, Chicken salad, Oatmeal cereal, a Baked Potato with black beans and fat-free cream cheese (Allowed to ‘cheat’ on a weekend day)

– Continue to avoid fast food (Have twice a month at most if unavoidable)

– Continue to avoid sweets and pastries (Allowed to have twice a month, small portions!)

– No binge drinking! (Ok one night allowed in the month)

*Keep it to 1 or 2 glasses of wine. Avoid soda as chasers if drinking spirits, use water or club soda. Ginger ale is not a bad chaser either.

– Keep working on those ABS, Buns and Thighs! (Ensure adequate rest days are included)

***For those who have to keep at it until the point of maintenance, instead of avoiding the above temptations, eliminate them and no ‘cheat’ meals allowed. It’s a sacrifice. Continue to exercise 5/6 days per week and remember that one cheat meal on the weekend can throw those 6 days of hard work and sweat out the window!

Happy journey Suga Readers! Keep it hot!

There is a NEW Healthy Food Spot in Town – VIANDAS!

Top left: Turkey wrap Below left: Escoveitch Fish wrap Right : Menu
Top left: Turkey wrap
Below left: Chicken salad
Right : Menu

Just this week, Verginia Mitchell opened her BRAND NEW Restaurant, VIANDAS at Shop #46, Pulse 38A, Trafalgar Road, Kingston 5. The menu is mainly comprised of healthy wraps, salads, shakes and smoothies.

Understandably, there are a few kinks to iron out since they just opened, for instance, only cash will be accepted for the next 2 weeks and its best to call their cell number. Ambience will also be worked on this weekend and others to come so you do not have to just walk in, but you can sit and enjoy your meal. Calorie counts are expected in the future too, but until then you can trust that Verginia who studied Culinary Nutrition will not be using fatty milk or any milk for that matter in your mashed potatoes, will give you a healthy selection of cheese or portions and will use natural seasonings. Nothing is fried.

I had my Turkey wrap delivered to my office today and it was quite tasty and filling for an affordable price of $550JMD. The presentation was lovely and vibrant. The delivery time was not too delayed either. Quite impressive for an opening week. I am surely looking forward to more weeks to come and will be trying other items on the menu. Word is the Escoveitch wrap is delicious and filling as well.

For now, Viandas is OPEN Mondays to Fridays from 8am to 5pm. Delivery is free with 5 orders and $300JMD if less than 5 orders. Call Viandas at 876-946-2424 or 876-831-3606. Follow Viandas on Instagram @viandasja!
