Suga’s Highlights from International Women’s Day at CWC’s Wine Pairing Soirée

20200310_035750

Sunday’s cool, breezy afternoon was perfect for savoury bites and bubbly to celebrate International Women’s Day and contribute to the Canadian Women’s Club of Jamaica’s outreach projects.

Harbour Wines and Spirits and Select Brands provided ideal pairings for offerings from EITS Café, Tea Tree Creperie, Raffaele’s Gourmet Pizzeria, Fromage, Chez Maria, Uncorked, Cannonball Café and Chocolate Dreams.

Everything was delightful but of course there were a few standouts.

EITS Café

Robyn Fox of EITS Café and her team for the day, along with a representative from Select Brands.

It’s always a pleasure to be around Robyn Fox and her hospitable team from EITS Café. Their Black Olive Bammy Bruschetta with Feta Cheese, Red Onion and Caramelized Onions was quite appetizing while paired with one of my fave’s, the Kung Fu Girl Riesling provided by Select Brands. Its apricot, white peach, honeysuckle aromas balanced out the sharpness of the Feta.

Fromage

Fromage’s Oxtail Arancini Balls.

Fromage’s Oxtail Arancini Balls were divine with Harbour Wines’ Ménage à Trois Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon. That wine was unforgettable from the Table Talk Observer Food Awards last year.

Then their Chèvre Canapés with fig glazed walnuts paired with Rosé was such a treat. The light, fluffy texture with the touch of sweet was perfection.

Kudos to Lisa Chin and her team. #SugaSnaps

Chez Maria

Chez Maria’s Vegetarian Pumpkin Kibbeh Cups.

Chez Maria’s Vegetarian Pumpkin Kibbeh Cups with hummus on top was both healthy and scrumptious. The winner for seconds if watching your calories. They were paired with Select Brands’ Primal Roots California Red.

Guess who’s going into Catering? – Cannonball Café

Cannonball’s Antipasto Skewer with Lomo, Olive, Tomato, Mozzarella and Mushroom Tortelini was a myriad of flavours that balanced each other well and even further with Harbour Wines’ Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chocolate Dreams

Pistacio Chocolate Bites from Chocolate Dreams.

You have to top off the evening with some sweet! I didn’t mind the spicy either. Chocolate Dreams outdid themselves with their Scotch Bonnet Caramel Fudge and Pistacio Chocolate Bites. Their entire spread was worth the calories. If you like sweet wines, the Roscato Sweet Red courtesy of Harbour Wines was a great choice.

Great evening filled with Vino, Savoury bites and Beautiful Women. Value for money with Proceeds to a great cause. Well done Canadian Women’s Club of Jamaica. #SugaEndorsed

Do you have your Tickets for this Wine Pairing Soiree yet?!

20200305_065219

If you can still get tickets, go get them at the restaurants mentioned on the flyer. 17 mile post/EITS Cafe will also deliver to you.

So many great restaurants/cafes in one place to pair the wines, cheeses and chocolates we love all for a good cause, driven by the Canadian Women’s Club of Jamaica.

Celebrate International Women’s Day, contribute to Charity and enjoy what is lined up to be a memorable culinary experience. It’s a triple win, but earn your carbs 🙂

Suga’s Breakdown!

The Terrace continues to be one of the few dependable fine dining restaurants in Jamaica. The quality of the food remains top-notch. The service is up there too, but the waiters could loosen up a little. Though professional, they could be more pleasant and use a bit of charm.

The Terrace has a quiet setting with ambience ideal for conversation as we enjoyed our courses.

Suga’s Night of Fine Food and Bubbly with City Views at 20 South!

20191121_021315.jpg

An intimate setting was created last Friday night on the rooftop of 20 South Luxury Apartments for Chef Garfield Jr.’s sold out Popup Kitchen by the exclusive, Sip and Savour on the 7th floor.

Just 2 weeks after Chef Garfield pleased the crowd at Jamaica Food and Drink Festival’s Picanté with his Candied Mango Tamarind Pork, Scotch Bonnet Caramelized Onions and wild garlic challah, Suga was excited to see what he had to offer.

20191115_201029.jpg

I sat at Table 5 with my husband, Randy and our server was quite attentive and pleasant, ensuring that wines courtesy of CPJ kept flowing throughout the night.

I ordered The Salmon and Randy went for The Oxtail. Then we eagerly watched Chef Garfield Jr and his team prepare our dinner right in front of us, with the ambience of light music in the background and the view of city lights.

20191121_021343.jpg

We didn’t have to wait long before two well plated dishes arrived at our table.

20191121_024817
Slow Braised Oxtail tossed with local aromatics and spices, Italian dumplings, fresh parmesan and mozzarella cheese ($3500JMD).

The Oxtail was tender to the bone and tantalized the tastebuds with the local spices and flavours. The serving size was quite small, but ask and you shall receive because when Chef Garfield took a walk around to greet guests and gather feedback, he ensured extra Oxtail was brought to our table.

20191115_202713
Cast Iron Toasted Almond with Oven-Roasted Pineapple Crusted Atlantic Salmon, marinated and cooked in emulsified butter and deglaze with white wine ($3200JMD).

I was quite satisfied with my Salmon dish though. Decent portions, well cooked Salmon with a delicious crust on top.

Chef Garfield’s PopUp Kitchen is certainly #SugaEndorsed and another one is quickly approaching. So stay tuned to his instagram page, @chefgarfieldjr as well as Sip & Savour, @sipandsavourja (Ph: 876-665-0231).

Highlights from GW Art’s Collection last Saturday!

20191003_051158.jpg

GW Art’s Collection was held in the Rio Bueno Suite of the Jamaica Pegasus last week Saturday evening. The weather held up and a few persons even came out within the first hour of the show, but the majority filtered in from 6pm onwards.

Guests appreciated the colours and textures used by the artist, as well as the variety of pieces on display. The Collection definitely represented GW Art’s motto that ‘GW Art is for Everyone’.

Acrylic on canvas was the main medium used for wall paintings, big and small, framed and unframed.

20191003_055131.png

Homey pieces greeted guests on the way in, followed by a wall of nature.

The standout piece for the night, ‘Connected’ showed depth and good technique from the artist.

GW Art’s new piece, ‘Connected’ – Acrylic on (60×60)m Canvas

‘Connected’ had quite a bit of representation for 1 piece and the artist ensured her perspective for it was expressed in her Lookbook, which ended up being passed around by guests with much excitement. The Lookbook included a chronological order of pieces from the current and previous collections with a bit about the artist, her perspective on each piece and how GW Art began. The Lookbook was dedicated to the artist’s late father and past West Indies Cricketer, Basil (Shotgun) Williams. Gabrielle plans on updating this lookbook as more pieces are created.

There were a few wooden signs and pieces on a grid wall panel display, courtesy of Miracle Corporation Ltd., that caught the eyes of many. These pieces showed the trendy side of GW Art and ‘Blessed’ was a favourite, with replicas ordered throughout the night.

20191003_050937.png

Amongst the smaller paintings, ‘Our Doctor Bird’ was another favourite, with light brush strokes. The piece was inspired by the artist’s outing to Cafe Eits one morning for breakfast, where  the hummingbirds would often come and go to their trees on property in the midst of a calm and cool ambience.

‘Figure 8’ and ‘Foreplay’ were quite a hit with the men.

Throughout the night, guests mingled and contemplated which pieces they should walk away with for the night.

With GW Art, it’s always wine o’clock, so wine was complimentary to guests complemented by what was on offer from the 3 selected, local artisans. Gabrielle Burgess of Suga Lifestyle, under which GW Art falls, knew that Jamaican made cheeses from Outland Hurders Creamery & Farmstead, Homemade Jams and Pepper Jellies from Chorlavi’s, along with bean to bar 71% dark Chocolate from One One Cacao would not only pair well with the Wine and Prosecco offered, but pair well amongst each other as well.

The artisans were pleasantly surprised, realising this during the event and were seen purchasing from each other. This is what Suga Lifestyle and embracing Brand Jamaica is all about!

Suga Baby, Tricia-Gaye O’Connor’s Breakdown!

Tricia relished in the ambience of the Summerhouse at The Liguanea Club and particularly enjoyed her Insalata Caprese and Grilled Lobster.

Insalata Caprese (Tomato, Fresh Mozzarella, Basil, Scotch Bonnet Oil) -$1200JMD
20190723_153104
Grilled Lobster with Charred Tomato Butter ($4900JMD)

She also shared the Shawarma Flatbread, Grilled Lamb and Ember Roasted Sweet Potato with a friend. They topped off dinner with a delish Brownie and ice cream. With regards to portions, she thought you had to be familiar with the menu to be aware of what the optimal choices were, but all the dishes she had were quite tasty.

20190723_153228
Shawarma Flatbread (Grilled Mushrooms, Pickled Onions, Spiced Yoghurt, Fresh Herbs) – $1250JMD
20190723_153249
Grilled Lobster; Grilled Lamb with Mint oil and Sundried Tomato Tapenade ($4900JMD); Ember Roasted Sweet Potato with Pickled Onions, Chevre, Herb oil, Goat Cheese ($950); Shawarma Flatbread

There weren’t many diners at the time, but access to Wine was slow. Service was decent otherwise.

The Summerhouse’s Veuve Cliquot Garden Party is a considerable option for dinner after work. It’s best not to go on your own though, as most dishes are enough to share. After all, it is a Garden party! The atmosphere is private around 6pm and more guests seem to arrive about 7/7:30pm. Their menu is posted online and Suga Baby, Tricia would return.
