As we have gotten our start to the New Year, we may start to wonder how we are going to restock our fridges after all the Christmas leftovers have finished and it isn’t even the end of January yet. So imagine the Homeless after the most generous time of 2017 is over. They may have run out of food supplies too.
When shopping or if you have any extra in the cupboard, please pick up a few Canned Food items and support the New Kingston Rotaract Club’s Canned Food drive that lasts until this Thursday, January 11. If you happened to skip cleaning out the closets at the end of 2017, they are having a Clothes Drive as well. Note that Monetary Contributions are accepted too and the New Kingston Rotaract Club is based in New Kingston, Jamaica.
Donated items will help to feed and clothe the Homeless at the Marie Atkins Shelter in Downtown, Kingston. The shelter is run by The Poor Relief Department and feeds and clothes a bit over 100 homeless persons each night.

In the Season of Giving, the Organization played its part by packaging and distributing Tin Drive items to the Residents of the Hannah Town Community. This was done at last Sunday’s Church Service.

As of October 17th this year, KFC Jamaica crowned The University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI, Mona) as the ‘Zinger Capital of Jamaica’ due to them having the most Zinger Sandwiches sold in the local restaurant network over the past few years.

Suga has endorsed the fact that KFC has recognized that many students on Campus face financial challenges, so they decided to offer assistance towards their education.
They ran a Social Media Competition via Instagram for their UWI Mona Zinger lovers to rap about the KFC Zinger, shortlisted entries to 10 Finalists and then the Winner with the most likes by November 1, 2017, Kemar DaCosta received a $400,000 Tuition Grant courtesy of KFC Jamaica!

Lupus is an autoimmune disease, meaning the body attacks itself.
It is a disease of flares and remissions involving issues with mainly the joints, skin and kidneys. My client, who I also went to University with, Danelle Pinnock, has been battling Lupus for 5 years and is currently experiencing a flare-up.
She called upon GW Art to do a commissioned piece for her. The small, canvassed, wall art was to depict Jesus surrounded by purple butterflies. Purple is the colour that symbolises Lupus Awareness. October is Lupus Awareness month as well.
I am happy that I fulfilled Danelle’s vision and request. She felt truly blessed by her GW Art piece and dedicated it to all Lupus warriors, stating, ‘Your restoration is found in Christ’.

Although I have helped to uplift her spirits on the UHWI ward, Danelle’s Lupus condition has developed in a way that causes various complications leaving her in a state where she needs constant care and very expensive medication. In recognition of Lupus Awareness month, here are also some facts about Lupus from Cleveland Clinic, including some that you may not know:
1. Lupus affects nine times more women than men, and more women of color than white women.
Women of childbearing age (13 to 49) are far more likely to be affected.
Genetics also plays a role.
2. Lupus symptoms can differ greatly from person to person. Some symptoms are common to other conditions, which can make diagnosis difficult.
Common Lupus symptoms include:
â— Constant fatigue (often misdiagnosed for iron deficiency)
â— Achy joints
â— A butterfly shaped rash around the cheeks and nose (Often treated by a dermatologist as a skin issue only)
â— Hair loss
â— Blood clots
â— Sensitivity to light
â— Chest pain when breathing
â— Mouth sores
â— Swelling in the extremities or around the eyes (Often misdiagnosed as a circulatory problem or kidney condition)
3. Lupus is a disease of flares and remissions.
Lupus flare-ups can be mild, or they can be severe. At least 75% of people with Lupus have arthritis and skin rashes. Half have kidney problems often shown with swollen feet/ankles. Lupus patients are also more vulnerable to infection than most people.
4. Diagnosis begins with a simple blood test.
An anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) blood test can be ordered upon suspicion. A negative ANA test result usually rules out Lupus.
***ANA test results will come back positive in virtually everyone with Lupus. However, some people will have a positive result even though they do not have Lupus. When the test comes back positive, other criteria have to be examined.
In those cases, the patient’s symptoms are usually compared with a list of 11 criteria for Lupus. If they meet four or more of the criteria, they are usually diagnosed with Lupus.
5. Treatment depends on the type of flare-ups experienced.
Mild swelling and joint pain may be treated with acetaminophen or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen.
Plaquenil, an anti-malarial drug that treats skin rashes, arthritis, and sometimes fatigue.
Rashes may be treated with topical steroid creams and corticosteroids, while immuno-suppressants treat serious kidney problems.
Diagnosis and treatment of Lupus keeps getting better.
Many persons with Lupus have a mild form. Proper medication can help persons with severe Lupus control their flare-ups and live productive lives.

The Rotary District 7020 Disaster Team has opened a Hurricane Irma Recovery Fund for the Caribbean Islands affected by the devastating Hurricane Irma.
Rotary is a non-profit organization and District 7020 consists of different territories in the Caribbean such as St. Martin, St. Maarten, Turks and Caicos Islands, Haiti, Jamaica, USVI, BVI, Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Anguilla. All territories are like a family to each other and for many years have worked together to help improve communities and assist less fortunate persons globally.
As a past Rotaractor, I am happy that my friends are alive and safe but I am truly saddened by the devastation that Hurricane Irma has caused to their homes and the Islands in general.
Within the District it seems that St. Martin, St. Maarten, BVI, USVI and the Turks and Caicos Islands have been struck the worse.
Six schools have been totalled in the BVI, so the Ministry of Education and Culture is considering to reopen under a shift system.

Many roofs have been taken off of the homes and buildings in St. Maarten, St. Martin, BVI and USVI.

The Islanders are trying to be positive and have been working hard to help their Islands rebuild. Digicel Jamaica and other Organizations have sent supplies of water and more to the Islands to give persons in communities and some supermarkets were just able to reopen.
Monetary aid is needed most at the moment though, for persons to have a roof over their head and more.
Please assist our Caribbean neighbours as much as you can in their time of need and help them to rebuild. One Love.
