Spirulina is a blue-green algae known to provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting benefits. Lately, it has been popularly used as a dietary supplement.
Spirulina has generally been considered to be safe, however, according to healthline.com, it may have various dangerous side effects as a result of contamination of harmful compounds that can worsen certain health conditions. For instance, if harvested from water polluted by toxins, Spirulina can thin your blood and increase the length of time it takes for blood to clot. Spirulina can also worsen autoimmune conditions such as Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Some persons may be allergic, and those with Phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare inherited condition, should avoid it.
Minor side effects of Spirulina may include nausea, insomnia, and headaches.
Should you stop using Spirulina?
According to healthline.com, if you purchase Spirulina from trusted brands, risk of contamination can be reduced However, there is no guarantee that Spirulina products are 100% contaminant-free.
It is advised to avoid Spirulina if you have a bleeding disorder or are on blood thinners. While some studies suggest that Spirulina does not affect blood clotting time, there is still not enough evidence of its effects on persons who are already taking blood thinners.
It is advised to avoid Spirulina if you have an autoimmune condition, allergies or PKU as well.
***Suga thinks the best precaution is to consult your Doctor if you are unsure whether this supplement is right for you.***

May is Lupus Awareness Month. Many symptoms of Lupus mimic those of other illnesses and can come and go over time, making diagnosis difficult. For instance, Lupus is often misdiagnosed as Anaemia.
If you have any of the following Signs and Symptoms, see a Rheumatologist as soon as possible. Lupus can affect any organ system of the body, including the heart, kidneys, lungs, blood, joints and skin. So it is important to detect Lupus early.

Quaint and rustic with a thatched roof and seaside view, Suga had the pleasure of eating fresh, farm to table dishes and juices for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner from Jakes Restaurant at reasonable prices. Their menu written on chalkboards daily provides you with enough options, whether you choose to eat healthy or not. Either way, you would be supporting the local farmers from the surrounding hills, mountains and plains in St. Elizabeth.
Grilled King Fish with Cous Cous, Black bean and Corn and Kale.
The staff were pleasant and service was timely. I am pleased to report that none of their dishes were underwhelming to me. However, highlights were their Codfish Fritters, Loaded Nachos, Callaloo Omelette and their Lamb Chops! Those Lamb Chops were seasoned to perfection and juicy to the bone. The best my husband has ever had.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is presented when a child’s social skills are challenged, they have repetitive behaviors and when they face difficulty with speech and nonverbal communication.
Autism can present itself at different stages of a child’s life, even up to age 3. It is important for parents or caregivers to learn the signs of Autism to seek professional help if necessary.
***Not all children with autism show all the signs. Many children who don’t have autism show a few. That’s why professional evaluation is crucial.***

Suga’s lunch from Healthy Bites earlier this year – Curried Chickpea wrap with sides of a fresh, raw vegetable salad and cous cous.
Healthy Bites is located at a house in Trafalgar Park, close to NCB Atrium where you can pick up your Lunch.
Vegetarian meals such as Lentil Stew and other meals, typically of Jamaican cuisine such as Ackee and Saltfish, usually range in cost from $500-$700JMD. The meals come with a natural, home-made juice too. Cane juice is used instead of added sugar. Sugarcane juice reduces bad cholesterol levels in the body and has natural sugars. However, still ensure that you are within your limits of sugar intake for the day if you choose to drink juice and not water.
Note that the safe amount of sugar to consume each day is as follows:Â
Men: 150 calories per day (37.5g or 9 tsp.)
Women: 100 calories per day (25g or 6 tsp.)
You can customize your Lunch based on the sides you desire and they are open to suggestions. They also Deliver!
Check out Healthy Bites today!

Non-profit organization, New Kingston Rotaract Club (Youth arm of Rotary) is having their annual Wing Sauce Competition this Saturday, March 30th by the Mona Dam. Like last year, they are having a Farmer’s Market too, encouraging us to eat healthy and buy our local produce, while contributing to charity at the same time. It’s a win-win for everyone.
Judging and sampling usually takes place at about 2:30/3:00pm. Suga will be judging again!
Then you can head down to the National Stadium to watch our very own young athletes put on quite a show at Champs! The writing is on the wall for the Girls with Edwin Allen, but for the Boys, will KC beat Calabar this year as they seem to be in position to do, or did they peak too early in the season?
Keep up with Suga Lifestyle’s Facebook and Instagram Page to keep updated with Champs and keep up with the New Kingston Rotaract Club by following them on Instagram @nkrcjamaica. If you are between the ages of 18-30, see how you can join them!
