Usain Bolt cements his Name in History and Michael Johnson’s 17-year WR was broken!

Usain Bolt has done it! He is now the first Sprinter ever to win Gold in the 100m at the Olympics 3 consecutive times!

Everyone thought that after the Semi-Finals he was ready to clock 9.6 odd or sub 9.8s based on previous trends. Usain Bolt clocked the fastest time of 9.86 in the Semi-Finals looking from side to side at DeGrasse who came 2nd and Bromell who qualified as a fastest loser in 3rd.

Photo of Usain’s Semi-Final: www.google.com

Suga called all finalists for the Final except for Ben Youssef Meïté who ran his PB from Ivory Coast. Nickel Ashmeade was in his Semi-Final won by Jimmy Vicaut and certainly disappointed coming 5th in 10.05s. Akani Simbine of South Africa came 3rd.

Justin Gatlin won his Semi-Final easily ahead of Yohan Blake in 9.94s. But Gatlin fled to the tunnel afterwards because he probably knew what was in store for him.

What was in store? Usain Bolt having the second slowest reaction time out of the blocks, keeping Gatlin in sight until he reached 60m, knowing Gatlin would get tired and then just ran right past him to win Gold in 9.81s. He could have proven everyone right by clocking sub 9.8s, but he only seemed concerned about winning and beat his chest before the line. He tweeted that this win was for his Jamaican people. Thanks Usain because you certainly made our weekend. Gatlin took the Silver in 9.89. Andre DeGrasse from Canada was a close 3rd and won the Bronze in 9.91.

Yohan Blake came from behind and was 4th with his SB in 9.93s.

USA’s Trayvon Bromell came last.

Of course Gatlin was and still is the centre of social media memes. Besides being called a bus conductor, here are 2 of Suga’s faves:

Will Gatlin collect more Silver at his next stop by the 200m? We’ll see. In the mean time, Usain Bolt to di worl’!

In other news,

Tennis

Great Britain’s Andy Murray won Gold, beating Juan Martín del Potro of Argentina. Kei Nishikori of Japan defeated Spain’s Rafael Nadal to win the Bronze.

Nadal is not leaving RIO empty handed though because he won Gold in the Men’s Doubles.

Venus Williams and Ram lost out on the Gold medal after being up 6-3 in the decisive 3rd set to go down 7-10.

The USA still won Gold though with the pair of Mattek-Sands and Sock.

Women’s Triple Jump Final
Jamaica’s Kimberly Williams was unable to medal and came 7th. Caterine Ibargüen of Colombia won the Gold.

Men’s 400m Final

Wayde Van Niekerk from South Africa won the 400m with a WORLD RECORD of 43.03 out of Lane 8! He was way ahead of Kirani James of Grenada who got the Silver in 43.76 and USA’s LaShawn Merritt the Bronze in 43.85. He was .15s faster than Michael Johnson’s World Record set in 1999 that nobody thought would be broken.

Van Niekerk sprinted the entire 400m and could not see anyone. He even accelerated further on the final stretch. Magnificent run and Congrats to Van Niekerk who clearly saved all his gas for the Final.

The Sprinter who was in Jamaica a few months ago at the Jamaica National Racers Grand Prix, trained with Bolt for a few days leading up to the meet and they were happy to be able to Congratulate each other as Champions after their races.

Stay tuned for today’s packed Schedule!

GOLD and BRONZE for Jamaica in the Women’s 100m in RIO!

It was Elaine Thompson who won the GOLD for Jamaica in 10.71s for the 100m Women Final! Our 2-time Defending Olympic Champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the Bronze. A valiant effort from Shelly after aggravating her toe injury in the Semi-Final. She ran her Season’s Best through the line in 10.86. It was a bittersweet feeling for Jamaicans knowing she was in shape to win the Gold and make history as the first woman to win 3 consecutive Olympic 100m titles, but it wasn’t meant to be after the injury was aggravated. We are extremely proud of our Pocket Rocket for being able to run through the pain and making the podium. Torie Bowie of the USA who came 3rd at the US trials got the Silver in 10.83.

Congrats Ladies! It was a talented field, demanding focus, fitness, determination and of course speed.

Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast continued to impress and came 4th with her PB in 10.86 (10.859). Thousandths of a second were used to separate her from Shelly.

Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands still could not manage to get a good start and probably won’t ever because of her height and was 5th with 10.90. Look out for her in the 200m though!

Michelle-Lee Ahye of Trinidad and Tobago was 6th in 10.92.

English Gardner who the USA expected to win Gold and who won at the USA trials could not manage the pressure of the big stage and finished 7th in 10.94.

Christania Williams of Jamaica looked as if she was injured and came last far behind with 11.80. News came in later that she had cramping in her calf muscle as a result of dehydration. A sign of being a rookie. However she is just coming out of high school and she put on a remarkable effort for Jamaica to even reach the Finals with her Personal Best and we are proud of her.

For those who missed it and wish to see the lead up to this heated field in the Final, let me take you through the 100m Women’s Semi Finals, as some familiar names were not there.

Torie Bowie and Ahye took Semi Final 1 on the same time in 10.90! Christania Williams did very well to come 3rd beating Ahoure of Ivory Coast with her PB of 10.96.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce blazed the field winning in 10.88 over Dafne Schippers in 10.90! Ta Lou of Ivory Coast finished 3rd in 10.94. Shelly was in tears at the end over her toes though. It became a huge concern and most if not all Jamaicans swarmed social media worried about Shelly’s toe and prayed for Shelly and her toe for the Final. (The prayers worked!)

Elaine Thompson ate English Gardner‘s food (totally destroyed her from start to finish) also finishing in 10.88! English Gardner was stuck on clocking 10.90 as well, glaring over to Thompson’s lane wondering what really just happened.

Marie-Josee Ta Lou and Christania Williams went through to the final as the fastest losers.

Tianna Bartoletta from the USA did not make the final, coming a surprising 4th in the Semi-final won by Shelly in 11.00s!

10000m Men Final

Mo Farah of Great Britain got tripped up and fell during his race with about 14 laps to go but got back up giving the thumbs up sign and went on to win the race. Gold for Mohamed Farah! His 3rd Olympic Gold, running through the line with his Mobot sign. Congrats Mo!

Long Jump Final

Damar Forbes failed to hit over the 8.38m mark and finished at the bottom of the pack, 12th with a mark of 7.82m. Jeff Henderson of the USA won the Gold with 8.32m.

Damar’s PB is 8.25m, which was the mark hit by the 4th place finisher. The athletes battled with headwind and Damar said he just did not feel comfortable or in full flight in the air for his last 2 jumps. There were other pits that could have been used to change the wind direction for the athletes but the wind in RIO changes direction all the time. That may be the reason they continued with the same pit. This is also the case at our very own National Stadium in Jamaica with 1 pit so our athletes must be prepared to put out their best in all conditions. Better luck next time Damar.

400m Semi-Finals

Javon ‘Donkey Man’  Francis finished 5th from Lane 1 in Semi Final 1 won by Kirani James easily in 44.02. LaShawn Merritt followed finishing 2nd. So Javon did not qualify for the Final. Well tried Donkey Man.

Van Niekerk jogged to 2nd in Semi Final 2. Trinidad & Tobago’s Cedenio won the race in 44.39. Ja’s Rusheen McDonald finished 6th, unable to qualify for the Final as well.

Taplin from Grenada won Semi Final 3 coming from behind for the win in 44.44.

Women’s Tennis

Mónica Puig of Puerto Rico upset Angelique Kerber (World #2) of Germany yesterday to win Gold.

Men’s Tennis

Juan Martín del Potro will face Andy Murray in the Gold Medal match today at 1pm

Rafael Nadal will face Kei Nishikori in the Bronze medal match this morning at 11:30am.

Swimming

Michael Phelps
helped take his team to Gold and an Olympic record last night in the 4×100m Medley Relay, in what he says will be his last Olympic race. His RIO total is 5 Gold and 1 Silver. He ends his Olympic career with 23 Gold medals and 28 Olympic medals overall and of course a standing ovation as he waved Goodbye to the spectators in the Olympic stadium.

Stay tuned for the action and Lane assigment of the Men’s 100m today!

How are the Field Events going for Ja in RIO?

Discus Throw

Fedrick Dacres for the Discus throw was a huge disappointment, throwing 50.69 after 2 no throws. I am sure they regret not carrying Jason ‘Dadz’ Morgan now!

This was the pathetic, unacceptable excuse which occurred a week before the event?!

Fedrick Dacres

We failed to Qualify further in the Hammer Throw and Shot Put.

Onto better news, for the Long Jump, only Damar Forbes made it, hitting the 7.85m mark.

Kimberly Williams also made the Triple Jump final for the Women. She normally performs well.

Good luck Damar and Kimberly!

How did the 100m Men’s Heats go in RIO?!

Let us start with Usain Bolt’s Heat. He had the usual slow start and had a fast, relaxed finish in 10.07. Andrew Fisher, a Jamaican running for Bahrain who Usain passed close to the line, came second in 10.12s.

Kemarley Brown, the Jamaican from Bahrain won his heat in 10.13s. The US athlete, Marvin Bracy clearly was not expecting such a fast Heat as a Jamaican was in disguise and Bracy came 3rd in 10.16s.

Gatlin won his heat easily in 10.01s.

Ashmeade (10.13) did what he needed to do as a Chinese athlete ran almost his fastest to win in 10.08s.

DeGrasse of Canada, one to watch as well as US’s Bromell won his heat well in 10.04.

Bromell was a casual 2nd in his heat. Ivory Coast’s Meite (PB 9.99) won that heat in 10.03.

Yohan Blake won his heat easily in 10.11 with a good start. A fellow Jamaican now representing Turkey, Jak Ali Harvey came 2nd in that heat in 10.14.

Richard Thompson of Trinidad & Tobago with Ato Boldon as his coach did not qualify with 10.29. Change of coach needed perhaps?

South Africa’s Simbine won the last Heat in 10.14.

Marvin Bracy and familiar names such as Vicaut, Kim Collins and LeMaitre went through as fastest losers.

Have you seen the Starting Lineup for the Women’s 100m Semis?!

There will be showdowns before the Final starting today at 7pm!

It is doubtful that young, Christania Williams will make the final but we expect Shelly and Elaine to go through. Christania is quite determined though and is a promising sprinter with good form for our near future.
