GW Art is in the Vitamin M December box in the USA!

vitaminmbox.jpg

Kerryanne Croft of the Vitamin M box says trying to fit in is boring, create the change you want to see.

What’s the Vitamin M box?

Based in New Jersey, Kerryanne saw a lack of support and love for Black owned businesses. She wanted to change that, so The Vitamin M Subscription Box was born. M is for Melanin, the dark brown to black pigment occurring in our skin.

Vitamin M isn’t just a subscription box. It is a movement to not only support these substantial businesses, but to help build their communities and share their stories. The Vitamin M box delivers brands in the form of beauty, fashion, books, home and lifestyle produced by people of colour to your doorstep.

Every 3rd month, Kerryanne donates 10% of the proceeds to a charity/non-profit in the Black and Brown community.

Kerry believes we need to continue to highlight these entrepreneurs over businesses that don’t see or respect their shine.

GW Art is a part of the Vitamin M box for December and the boxes are sold out!

During the Summit, 500 Rotarians and Rotaractors (members of the youth arm, Rotaract) were put to work. They packaged 100,000 meals to send across the globe to combat world hunger. Kudos to Rotary District 7020 for executing this initiative.

The 3-in-1 Cemetery, Voodoo and French Quarter Tour, New Orleans. Is the Voodoo real?

Flingback Friday to the 3-in-1 Cemetery, Voodoo & French Quarter Tour ($13 by Groupon (or $25) + $1 entry to cemetery; 28 persons per tour) that I took in New Orleans in October!

The tour lasted over 2 hours, but with our experienced and exciting Tour Guide, ‘Stormy’, it was worth it. It provides you with a chance to enter one of the world-renown cemeteries, St. Louis Cemetery #1 in New Orleans, while also visiting popular landmarks in the French Quarter. A bit of Voodoo culture and history was also included, as this adventure combined 3 tours in 1.

The French Quarter/Cemetery/Voodoo tour meets at the corner of Royal and Conti Street. Persons are to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled tour time to check in.

You can learn how and why people are buried above ground and how the “Vault” works! The grave of the famous Queen of Voodoo, Marie Laveau is also there.

Inside of St. Louis Cemetery #1, New Orleans

I saw a lot of negative reviews of persons spending most of the time in the cemetery and it being too crowded. I would note that the key is to leave on an early tour and request Stormy.

Upon arrival, we were one of probably 3 other tour groups in the cemetery. Stormy was very considerate of other groups’ space, so we would stop and talk before a group left a particular landmark. I can’t say the same about other tour guides though. Close to the end of our Cemetery tour, many tour groups arrived and interrupted our stops or paths, but thankfully we didn’t have much time left in there.

The Louis Armstrong Park

As the tour moved to the Louis Armstrong Park, we could see more and more that Tour guide, Stormy was experienced, passionate, knowledgeable and talented. He even sang for us where the Congo tribes would sing and dance in different groups in an area called Congo Square. This historical landmark is the foundation of New Orleans’ Musical traditions, including Jazz.

The tour went over the 2 hours, but Stormy didn’t give any place more attention than the other. Everywhere was explained in full detail in a captivating way and he was able to answer all of our questions. Two thumbs up! #SugaEndorsed

If you think you will never get to visit New Orleans or you don’t mind a few spoilers, here you go!

Why are tombs in the New Orleans’ Cemeteries called Vaults?

They house thousands of persons. Once all the remains of someone have decomposed leaving the bones, the bones are collected, put in a bag and labeled. They are placed in the same tomb in an underground section or section below the tomb, called a vault.

Nicolas Cage and Brad Pitt in New Orleans

Nicolas Cage fell in love with New Orleans when he visited. He bought properties there including a Haunted House that he ended up having to resell, losing a lot of money. A story was told that Brad Pitt ran out of that alleged ‘Haunted House’ and had to arrange for his belongings to be sent to him.

Tomb Space in the St. Louis Cemetery #1

Though limited and extremely expensive, you can purchase your tomb space and place a tomb in the renowned St. Louis Cemetery where you wish to be laid to rest.

You can make a wish by Marie Laveau’s tomb

20181013_144216
Queen of Voodoo, Marie Laveau’s tomb

It is believed that if you knock on Marie Laveau’s tomb to wake up her spirit, then make a wish and mark three x-s on her tomb, that your wish will come true. She was especially known for granting love wishes. If you have the chance to revisit her tomb, you are to out a circle around those x-s to show that your wish has come true.

Note that persons are discouraged from marking any of the tombs. A woman was locked up in jail for painting Marie Laveau’s tomb pink. The tomb was white so if painted over, the paint would bleed through. They had some costly reconstructing to do.

Persons currently reside at Marie Laveau’s home

Tour Guide, Stormy showing us Marie Laveau’s home.

● Why was Marie Laveau called the Queen of Voodoo?

It was believed Marie Laveau knew everything about everybody, that she could be in more than one place at a time and that she could make things happen to people. For instance, she would know a husband was cheating on his wife before the wife knew, then notify her. However, this was because she was a hairdresser by profession, so knew everyone’s business.

She had two daughters that looked and dressed just like her, who she also taught to tie their head wrap, called a tignon, just like her. Tignon is the French New Orleans version of African head wrap. Nobody else in New Orleans wrapped their head in that style. So when all three were seen in different places at the same time, it was believed she could be in three places at once.

In terms of voodoo, if a man was harassing a woman and the woman went to Marie about it, Marie would approach the man with a warning to leave the woman alone. Since she had the reputation of being the Queen of Voodoo, the man would instantly leave the woman alone and perhaps look the other way if he saw the woman ever again. She would be paid for these requests and this is how she gained wealth.

Pioneer of Jazz, Louis Armstrong used to dig through garbage to provide food for his family.

QB Aaron Rodgers gives 49ers a cold blooded comeback in Monday Night Football!

20181016_084357

Last night was a thrilling game between the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers, highlighted by a clutch performance from Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers. Packers handed the 49ers their 4th straight defeat, picking up a 33-30 win last night in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The 49ers started out with 10-0 lead and each time they pushed ahead, Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers made a play to bring the Packers back to either level the score or push them ahead. The play that stung the most though, was when Rodgers threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams to help tie the game at 30 with 1:55 remaining. Then he drove the Packers down the field for kicker, Mason Crosby’s game-winning 27-yard field goal as time expired.

Note that Rodgers’ movement was limited with an injured knee and there has been a constant cry for a better coach for the Packers. After all, Rodger’s can’t save them all the time.

As usual, well done Rodgers. Looking forward to more this season!

In other news, it’s NBA Day! The NBA Season kicks off TONIGHT!

Here’s the schedule for tonight’s return of the NBA Season:

20181016_082407.jpg

Who will win this year?

The Lakers will always have a chance with their new teammate LeBron James. With a healthy Kyrie Irving, so do the Boston Celtics. But, barring any injuries and once DeMarcus Cousins returns from injury, KD (Kevin Durant) will be unstoppable and it should be Warriors all the way!

Novak is back!

The favourite won the US Open for the Men!

Novak Djokovic won the US Open Men’s Final yesterday, beating Juan del Potro in fine style and straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to equal American great, Pete Sampras’ haul of 14 major titles.

Djokovic was in top form and so was del Potro. But even though del Potro played well, he was not on the same level as Djokovic.

Djoko’s rivals, Roger Federer with 20 and Rafael Nadal with 17, are the only ones still ahead and dominating Men’s tennis along with him. Djokovic won Wimbledon this year as well, making it his first back-to-back Grand Slam titles since June 2016. While Nadal won the French and Federer won the Australian Open this year.

Djokovic, will now climb to 4th in the world after his great comeback from an elbow injury and back-to-back Grand Slam victories.

Congrats Novak!

Women

20180903_005740.jpg
Venus Williams (L) and her sister, Serena Williams (R) embrace after their 3rd round match last Friday night at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Serena Williams played her best tennis since her return from having a baby, routing her sister, Venus Williams 6-1, 6-2. Probably because she knows her best?

Serena moved on to send home Kaia Kanepi who eliminated the world no. 1, Simona Halep in the 1st round. Everyone thought the match would be over quickly after Serena destroyed her 6-0 in the first set in 18 minutes, but she recovered and came back to take the 2nd set 6-4. Serena took on the challenge to win the 3rd set and match, 6-3.

Serena plays Karolina Pliskova next, tomorrow at 9am ET.

20180903_021911.jpg

Young Naomi Osaka, is also still in it to win it.

Men

Things are coming down to a crunch with the Men as well. Will there be a Djokovic-Federer Semifinal?

Novak Djokovic eliminated Richard Gasquet easily in straight sets.

Dominic Thiem who eliminated Stan Wawrinka early, also eliminated marathon-setter, Kyle Anderson in straight sets, which is never easy to do.

American, John Isner eliminated the Canadian, Milos Raonic in an epic 5-setter.

Juan del Potro sailed through his match to reach the Quarterfinals. He plays John Isner tomorrow!

Roger Federer (Photo: Bleacher Report)

Roger Federer schooled the young Aussie, Nick Kyrgios in straight sets to advance to the round of 16.

Watch “US Open Hot Shot: Roger Federer Goes AROUND The Net” on YouTube here and the shot is legal!

Young, Kei Nishikori is still in it to win it, as well as 2014 US Open Champ, Marin Cilic.

Rafael Nadal (Photo: Bleacher Report)

World no. 1, Rafael Nadal was forced to rise to the occasion to eliminate hard-hitter, Nikoloz Basilashvili in 4 sets. That was quite a quality match! He plays Dominic Thiem tomorrow!

Stay tuned!

Serena Williams is out in her tutu for the US Open after her cat suit was banned. I mean, it’s not like the fashionable G.O.A.T would wear it again anyway.

Twirllll

Serena meets her sister, Venus today for the 3rd round at the Arthur Ashe Stadium at about 6pm ET on ESPN.

How has Serena been hitting? Check this video out from ESPN on her 2nd round win by clicking on the link here:

Upsets on the Ladies side so far

The no. 1 seed, Simona Halep crashed out of the US Open quite early in the 1st round! So did the no. 2, Caroline Wozniacki last night in her 2nd round match.

French and Wimbledon Champ, Garbiñe Muguruza also tapped out.

Who’s left for the Ladies besides the Williams Sisters who have dominated the sport for years?

The field is still wide open. But Defending Champ, Sloane Stephens is still in it to win it.

Maria Sharapova is still struggling with her comeback.

Then there is young Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys, Karolína Plíšková, Jelena Ostapenko, Petra Kvitová and more!

What’s happening with Men?!

No upsets on the Men’s side just yet! Big name favourites Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are looking good and still in it to win it!

Stay tuned!
