Cheers to Friday from Hotel 39 in Montego Bay!

The Building we knew as The Wexford Hotel on Gloucester Avenue in Montego Bay, has been fully refurbished and rebranded to Hotel 39!

The boutique Hotel 39 (Ig: @hotel39jamaica) has adequate parking, 82 rooms with its rooftop pool and nearby access to the beach, being located on Montego Bay’s famous Hip Strip.

Their Restaurant is already #SugaEndorsed after our visit two weeks ago, well taken care of by our Waitress, Caleisha. Seeing a professional, young lady so polite, attentive and genuinely happy doing her job in the hospitality and service industry was absolutely refreshing. After a long day, we truly appreciated her stellar service and kudos to the Chef for making my Pasta healthy, yet delicious, tossed in a light sauce just the way I like it.

Cocktail options seemed limited at the Bar, but the Bartender did no wrong with my Whiskey Sour.

We’re happy to have Hotel 39 back and we look forward to revisiting soon!

XoXo, Suga

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Now remember I may be many things including a Fitness expert, but I am a Radiographer first, that still performs Mammograms and I will share a quick story.

I have a cousin who called me years ago very concerned about a lump in her left breast that she felt when she was drying off, coming out of the shower. Her Mom died from Breast Cancer, so there’s a family history. I told her doing a Mammogram as soon as possible was the first step. She did it, read me the report and before doing the suggested biopsy I told her to prepare herself, because based on how the lump was described with irregular, asymmetric, undefined edges etc., it was likely to be cancer. I also told her she had to adjust her lifestyle IMMEDIATELY. No Alcohol, No Meats, No sugars and she complied, going Vegetarian as Breast Cancer was confirmed with the biopsy and her journey to beating Breast Cancer began, which she did well. She was almost 50 at the time and after her Mastectomy, removing the left breast, she came out in high spirits, telling jokes, hardly in any pain… Even later down the road serving her friends breakfast SHE cooked after Chemo. Her roommate though, when she did the Mastectomy, was much younger for the same surgery, probably in her thirties. Her family brought her fast food before the surgery and she said that was her regular diet. Made her happy. After the surgery she was in excruciating pain and crying for hours. We said to ourselves, wow, diet must have had a significant impact.

Here are Foods to Have and Foods to Avoid:

Foods to Have:
Citrus fruits, berries, grapes
Leafy green vegetables such as kale, arugula, spinach; other vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli
Fatty fish like Salmon
Fermented foods like Yogurt, Kimchi
Beans
Herbs and spices e.g. oregano
Whole grains and walnuts

Foods to Avoid:
Fast food
Alcohol
Fried foods
Processed meats
Added sugars
Refined carbs

I will leave you to keep in mind that many factors are associated with Breast Cancer development. So while improving your diet can improve your overall health and reduce your cancer risk and pain during recovery, it is only one piece of the puzzle.

You still need to do annual Breast Cancer screenings like Mammograms and your manual checks, standing AND laying down. Early Detection Saves Lives.

#wcw with Queen Amina Blackwood Meeks & Her New, yet Vintage Rendition of Miss Lou!

Gabby Burgess of Suga Lifestyle with Amina Blackwood Weeks who performed her new, ‘Miss Lou 2024’ at The Poetry Society of Jamaica’s Monthly Fellowship last night, September 24, 2024 at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.

So honoured to have heard it first at The Poetry Society of Jamaica’s monthly poetry fellowship last night at the Amphitheatre of Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.

Amina Blackwood Meeks’ MISS LOU 2024 took us way back, with views and perspectives of Miss Lou from members of our society and her own family, both positive and negative. I thoroughly enjoyed the intermittent rhythmic flow, reminiscent of a true warrior.

Amina incorporated classic lines and references from Miss Lou herself and ultimately, a call to respect and embrace our talents, our culture.

We must appreciate the value of our own and pay what is due. A direct, yet indirect call for Poetic Justice, while tributing our Best Poet and Folklorist, Miss Louise Bennett, familiarly known to us as, Miss Lou. Miss Lou contributed significantly to our Jamaican theatre, culture, particularly to our language and the literary arts for over 50 years.

For what we were blessed to experience for Free, I hope others pay every dollar.

Known for their Barrel Roasted Chicken, I switched things up, starting with their tasty Tomato Bruschetta (on bammy!) and tried the new lightly Curried pineapple Chicken which was seasoned so well…a fantastic balance, as it wasn’t too spicy. The sweet potato croquettes that accompanied it, were perfection. Loved it! Awesome dish.

Their Saltfish Fritters and Shrimp Pasta with herb Pesto are usually hits too.

***N.B. Not always Paw-friendly… Check in with the Owner first, to make sure the big ones aren’t there 🙂 Reservations recommended; Call +1 (876) 367-8191***

A Thankful Tuesday… When Starting an Art Collection begins with GW Art!

Suga Lifestyle, GW Art’s Gabby Burgess with Shermalie Hill at The Jamaica Pegasus, Kingston, Jamaica on September 3, 2024.
Suga Lifestyle’s Art & Lifestyle Expo Meet & Greet at AC Hotel Kingston, Jamaica on August 9, 2024

I know these “Tailored Jamaican” Ladies will bring Shermalie Joy everyday.

It was on set Jamaica Stock Exchange’s CBX Channel one morning promoting Suga Lifestyle’s annual Tailored Jamaican Pop-Up Fashion Show event last October, when he first laid eyes on them and kept asking, so when will it be finished?

I kept saying, not yet, when it is you will know. When I saw the locally designed Dress I would be wearing for the Art & Lifestyle Expo Meet & Greet in August, I instantly fell in love with all the colours that complemented each other. I said, that is it! GW Art’s “Tailored Jamaican” Ladies will be complemented by those colours too and they will stand by me whenever I speak. The Painting was showcased at my GW Art (Ig: @gwartbygabby) booth the next day at the Expo, making quite a statement in AC Hotel Kingston’s Ballroom. When Shermalie saw it, he smiled and said, you finally finished it and it didn’t take too long for him to tell ke he was ready to start his Collection with local Art.

When you Invest in Local Art, you Invest in Jamaica.

XoXo,
Suga
