The Miss Universe 2017 Pageant was held in Las Vegas last night and the beautiful and confident, well poised South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters took the crown! Congratulations to her. Well deserved.
The Pageant featured gorgeous gowns, but for Suga, it was our Miss Jamaica, Davina Bennett in Yellow who stood out amongst a sea of nudes and neutrals. Her stunning lemon-yellow gown with caped sleeves was designed by our local, Uzuri International Designs Ltd. The pop of colour was accentuated by her beautiful dark coloured skin and natural hair. Davina modelled the gown with the necessary charisma and flair.
Davina reached the top 5 answering a question on how Men and Women can work together to tackle the issue of Sexual Harassment. She started off well but got nervous towards the end, giving an overall mediocre answer. Not to worry though, because the other Top 5 Finalists who were given questions on other major issues gave mediocre answers as well. Miss South Africa, who was a favourite of mine from the beginning, was quite confident and concise with her answer.
After the Top 3 Finalists were announced, all 3 answered the same question this time around, of course using soundproof headphones so they could not hear each others’ answers.
The Question asked which Quality did they have that they were most proud of and how will they apply it to their time as Miss Universe.
Miss Jamaica was announced first in the Top 3, thus called first to answer. It was obvious she was nervous, starting off with a grammatical error, then finished eloquently with an overall good answer. She mentioned her Drive to create awareness about the deaf and how they should be treated as equals to get jobs etc. She even added a bit of sign language that was a nice touch.
Miss Colombia, Laura Gonzales followed with a mediocre answer having to do with her quality of Compassion. At first, I thought Miss Jamaica should have definitely placed before Miss Colombia for the 2nd spot. However, if you watch them answer their questions again, Miss Colombia answered confidently and more fluently without stuttering. I think Davina’s initial blunder and obvious nervousness throughout her answer costed her 2nd place and maybe even the crown. She also seemed a bit rehearsed.
Miss South Africa’s answer was natural, concise and to the point again. Her quality was Confidence, which was no surprise and she expressed herself well.

I am proud of Davina for representing Jamaica well. She was absolutely stunning and a natural beauty. Congrats Davina!
