Flashback Friday to lunch at Smoked Marlin Restaurant two years ago.

Smoked Marlin is still up and running on the western end of the island, Hanover and is a fantastic spot for Seaside dining while indulging in authentic Jamaican cuisine.

Food Trucks of Jamaica at Kensington Crescent!

20190401_191135

Last Friday, Food Trucks of Jamaica made their way behind NCB Twin Towers at 2 1/2 Kensington Crescent off Oxford Road. They served lunch from 11:30am to 3:30pm.

This was their menu!

Suga Taster, Stephen Greig visited the Food Truck last Friday at 1:45pm and reported that there was no line to my surprise. He said customer service was average, but quick.

He had the Chicken and Jerked Sausage Basil Pesto Alfredo Penne ($1300JMD) and thought that there was more Sausage than Chicken and it lacked spice. However, the Pasta was well cooked, the sauce was creamy and cheesy with just the right amount of parsley and portions were more than sufficient, so the meal was value for money.

Kudos to Food Trucks of Jamaica for serving their food in a biodegradable box.

#tbt to my Meatless Lunch from Healthy Bites!

20190328_070008
Suga’s lunch from Healthy Bites earlier this year – Curried Chickpea wrap with sides of a fresh, raw vegetable salad and cous cous.

Healthy Bites is located at a house in Trafalgar Park, close to NCB Atrium where you can pick up your Lunch.

Vegetarian meals such as Lentil Stew and other meals, typically of Jamaican cuisine such as Ackee and Saltfish, usually range in cost from $500-$700JMD. The meals come with a natural, home-made juice too. Cane juice is used instead of added sugar. Sugarcane juice reduces bad cholesterol levels in the body and has natural sugars. However, still ensure that you are within your limits of sugar intake for the day if you choose to drink juice and not water.

Note that the safe amount of sugar to consume each day is as follows:

Men: 150 calories per day (37.5g or 9 tsp.)

Women: 100 calories per day (25g or 6 tsp.)

You can customize your Lunch based on the sides you desire and they are open to suggestions. They also Deliver!

Suga’s Breakdown:

Mike’s Supper Club at The Trident Hotel had spectacular service and ambience enhanced by rhythmic live jazz, where the band used Trident’s one of a kind Ferrari red 1917 Steinway baby grand piano. Some of the best voices in world, jazz and bop music have left their nightly signature on it.

Beverages were grand, but I can’t say the same about their dishes.

We started things off with Pumpkin Soup and a Goat Cheese Salad. The Pumpkin Soup was probably the largest dish of the night.

20190312_122402
Pumpkin Soup with coconut, lemongrass and spiced chicken (US$12 +G.C.T +Serv. charge)
20190312_122454
Fresh Greens and Goat Cheese Salad  – Fried Cheese, Pickled Onion, Red Grapes, charred Pepper and Red Radish (US$15 +G.C.T +Serv. charge)

The Goat Cheese Salad was quite tasty and flavourful, but our entrees followed and disappointed in that aspect and more. We had the Rack of Lamb and Surf n Turf. Both dishes were extremely small servings. In addition to an already exorbitant cost of US$50 for the Surf and Turf, sides of Vegetables and Starches were additional for US$3 and $US6 respectively before tax and service charge.

20190312_122848
Rack of Lamb – Pistachio crust, Wine Tamarind Jus, roasted Vegetable and Butternut Puree (US$32 +G.C.T +Serv. charge)
20190312_122719
Surf n Turf – Angus Beef Fillet, seared Shrimps, roasted Seaweed and smoked Pepper Coulis (US$50 +G.CT +Serv. charge)

To add to the disappointment of small servings, even though our meats were medium rare as requested, the Lamb and Beef lacked proper seasoning and flavour.

The food may not have been value for money, but it was certainly a pleasurable experience.
