Congratulations to the Champions of the Weekend!

SUPER BOWL LIV CHAMPIONS – KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

They say defense wins Championships, but last night the 49ers did all that they could do, then towards the end lacked the offense they needed and a star QB to get them the points for that Super Bowl win.

Both teams had interceptions and we didn’t see a lot of Mahomes Magic, but the Chiefs came together as a team to win this Super bowl led by their Head Coach, Andy Reid. Reid now ranks 6th in all-time NFL head coaching wins at 222. He was previously the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (1999 – 2012).

AUSTRALIAN OPEN WOMEN’S CHAMPION – SOFIA KENIN

20200203_050509

21-year old Sofia Kenin came from a set down to 2-time Champion, Garbine Muguruza to win her 1st Grand Slam and the Australian Open on Saturday. She never gave up and played the best tennis of her life. With more areas to improve in her game, I look forward to seeing rivalries with her and other young, fiery, competitive players such as Bianca Andreescu (injured left knee who did not compete) and Coco Gauff in the future.

Congrats Sofia! Dreams do come true.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN MEN’S CHAMPION – NOVAK DJOKOVIC

For the men, the top 3 continue to reign. Novak Djokovic (2) remains the Australian Open King, being 8-0 at Australian Open finals, now within 2 Grand Slams to equal Raphael Nadal and 3 to match the GOAT, Roger Federer. I am sure they will continue to battle it out this year with the French Open next!

Novak showed the true meaning of Champion when he came back to win from 2 sets down to Dominic Thiem, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4! Young, Dominic Thiem (5) was in top form and took out World no. 1 Nadal in an epic 5-setter in the Quarters and Zverev (7) in the Semis, who we may see more of in the near future. His legs started to go with more errors in the 5th versus Djokovic, while Djokovic was revamped to play spectacular tennis. Great match.

Congrats Novak Djokovic! Kobe Bryant, his late friend and our basketball legend whose initials and #24 he wore on his warm up suit would have been proud. #RIPKobe #BlackMambaForever

Over 6 million dollars was raised to fight the Australian fires from the Open as players made various pledges and there were other contributions. Let us pray that they are able to restore their lands, animals and normal way of living soon.

The Chiefs and 49ers are Heading to Super Bowl 54!

20200119_181216
Chiefs QB, Patrick Mahomes

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP

The Kansas City Chiefs advance to their first Super Bowl in 50 years! Congrats to them!

Tennessee Titans QB, Ryan Tannehill and Head Coach, Mike Vrabel showed their inexperience yesterday and Mahomes’ magic killed their fairy tale.

The Chiefs’ young and talented QB, Patrick Mahomes had 3 Touchdown passes, 1 memorable Touchdown (TD) run before halftime and punched his ticket to the Super Bowl! Chiefs won 35-24.

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP

The defense failed Green Bay and the 49ers had a field day, where Packers’ QB, Aaron Rodgers was sacked twice in the 1st half. The Packers were also intercepted twice and the 2nd quarter ended without them getting on the board, down by 27. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. The Packers showed some life after Halftime. They got on the board with a TD, but defense failed them again, and 49ers were up 34-7 at the end of the 3rd. In the 4th, despite a comeback attempt that was too late by the Packers, QB, Jimmy Garoppolo and his 49ers rushing attack were just too fast and too much for the Packers. They won 37-20.

The Chiefs and the 49ers will go for the Lombardi!

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will take Centre stage at the Super Bowl Halftime show.

Who’s Going to the Super Bowl?!

20200119_120115
Photo: ESPN Scorecentre

Who’s going to the 54th Super Bowl?! The action starts with the Titans vs. the Chiefs!

The Titans are the underdogs, but that’s nothing new, especially when they ended up winning in Week 10 vs. the Chiefs. Their running back, Derrick Henry has to be controlled and their offense will be strong versus the Chiefs. However, the Chiefs have wide receivers that have carried the most in the NFL this season and young Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, last year’s MVP, who usually has a bag of tricks and gets at least 8 or 9 possessions. The Titans have a different game plan every week, a discarded quarterback from Miami Dolphins who never started a post season game before this season and ended the Patriot’s dynasty in the wild card round, but Suga still got the Chiefs on this one!

For the Packers vs. the 49ers, the 49ers have been consistent and slaughtered the Packers when they met during the season. On paper they should win, but you can never bet against one of the greatest Quarterbacks of all time, Aaron Rodgers for the Packers, who is trying to go to and win another Super Bowl a decade later!

Tune in and enjoy!

Suga’s Breakdown

The Lodge Restaurant had an intimate, open air setting overlooking the Caribbean sea from the cliffside in Negril. It’s name is quite appropriate with its homey, wooden and log decor, similar to a getaway log cabin or lodge. So homey, you would meet resident Ridgebacks, Tensing and what looked like his brother. No need to worry though, once ignored, they stayed at a tolerable distance and quietly moved to the next table. The thatched roof and seaside views made you remember you weren’t anywhere cold, but enjoying island temperatures and sea breeze instead.

We caught Negril’s famous sunset and enjoyed the well mixed cocktails from the bar and the Grilled Garlic Lobster, which was the special for the night. The Chef’s grill is visible to diners and the Lobster was freshly caught, cooked and seasoned to perfection. The dish was delish!

Grilled Garlic Lobster

Most of the variety of items on the menu are done to order and seafood is freshly caught, but service was still timely and the staff were quite attentive and courteous.

Tensing Cool Runnings (USD$10): Whisky, Orange, Pineapple, Ginger Beer; Blue Lagoon (USD $10): Wray & Nephew White rum instead of Vodka, Blue Curacao, Liqueur, Lemonade

Cheers to visiting The Lodge Restaurant! I had a pleasant, memorable stay at Tensing Pen too. It’s #SugaEndorsed.

Remembering CAP a.k.a Basil (Shotgun) Williams

Today marks the 4th anniversary of the passing of my father and former West Indies Cricketer, Basil (Shotgun) Williams.

20191025_035407

How did he get the nickname, Shotgun?

As an opening batsman, he would always take a good look at the situation then pull the trigger, using his wrist to generate powerful shots that would echo around Sabina park, hence the name SHOTGUN.

BasilWilliams19911008

Fun fact

Shotgun is in the history books as one of the elite few players to score a century on his debut with the West Indies. It was a series versus Australia in 1978, where he ended with 257 runs!

More memorable moments

Shotgun was consistent and rarely misfired. He scored 111 versus the best of India in 1979 at Eden Gardens, Calcutta, matching skills with some of the very best in the game.

20151027_234408-1.jpg
‘Williams about to be dropped in the slip. The bowler to suffer was Sheikh’ He was eventually caught at 87 runs in 1978 at Poona in India.

Basil played 7 tests for the West Indies between 1978 and 1979, that included two entertaining centuries. He had an impressive test average of 39.08 and an average of 36.02 in the regional first class game.

Cricket after the West Indies

Shotgun’s passion for the sport continued with his career in local cricket, including his Captaincy of the Jamaica Cricket team.

How was Shotgun remembered by others?
20151027_234207-1-1.jpg

20191025_041416
An excerpt from the SportsStar, of which Shotgun was on the cover – Saturday, December 2, 1978.

Past West Indies Cricket Board President, Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron expressed in his Press release after Dad passed, that ‘Basil was a tough, but fair captain and a no-nonsense guy’.

Persons loved to call him ‘BOASY’.

Which lessons did Shotgun teach and why was he a role model to many?

Shotgun believed that you could be the best player on the squad, but if you failed to have a certain level of discipline that he knew might affect the quality of your game and if he had the power to, sometimes he did, he would let you know that you would not be playing in the upcoming match. He knew his consistency and success not only came with natural talent but discipline, practice and hard work and he wanted to see players under his tutelage acquire similar results doing just that. He was a winner and taught me and my two brothers to be winners as well, with the same fiery, competitive spirit. He was a role model and teacher to many and genuinely wanted to see persons be the best they could be.

When did Shotgun retire?

Shotgun retired from the Jamaica team in 1986 on a high note and remained involved in the sport as a Selector, Board member, Team manager and of course had a few knocks in Club Cricket before he migrated to the US.

If he were alive today, what would he say to Chris Gayle?

Learn how to time the ball!

Continue to Rest in Peace Shotgun a.k.a CAP!

Jamaica Finish with their 2nd Biggest Medal Haul ever at the World Championships!

20191007_023748.png

Despite being in the transitioning phase of athletics and going with no Usain Bolt, Jamaica finished in Doha with their 2nd biggest medal haul in World Championships history with 12 medals!(Compared to 13 in 2009 and 2015)

Imagine we didn’t get medals expected from Elaine Thompson and Omar McLeoud too!

However, we had our biggest showing ever in Field events. Spectacular performances by our athletes.

Jamaica also medalled in the Mixed 4×400m relay, the Women’s 4×400m and the men had an impressive 2nd place finish in the Men’s 4×400m relay. Suga sees our 400m male athletes on the rise, especially in our young, Akeem Bloomfield. What a first leg!
