Suga’s Breakdown!

The Terrace continues to be one of the few dependable fine dining restaurants in Jamaica. The quality of the food remains top-notch. The service is up there too, but the waiters could loosen up a little. Though professional, they could be more pleasant and use a bit of charm.

The Terrace has a quiet setting with ambience ideal for conversation as we enjoyed our courses.

There is a NEW Spot to Pig Out on Ribs in Town!

Suga’s Breakdown!

There is a new Barbecue Smoke Pit in town and it looks like enterprising restaurateur, Kirk Chin of Fromage and more has something to do with it 😉

The new Southern style spot opened its doors just last Thursday, January 2, 2019. It is close to the entrance of Market Place avoiding all current Market Place construction and gives you a Texas vibe upon entry where they nailed the modern ‘Pig Pen’ decor, literally.

20200104_195141.jpg

Suga visited last Saturday for Dinner. There is indoor and outdoor seating, but at the moment, it seems like you need to go to the cashier to order, then take the number for your table and pick your desired spot if dining.

The staff is green, but pleasant and attentive. My husband, Randy does not eat Pork (go figure!), so was looking forward to their Beef Brisket. We would have to return for that though, because its coming soon. Otherwise, their Menu, which is likely to change looked like this!

20200108_051509.jpg

We ordered a 1/2 pound of the Ribs, 1/4 pound of the Chicken, a large Mac & Cheese, Fries and 2 Beers. Our bill came to roughly $6000JMD, which I found to be quite reasonable because we were also quite satisfied after the meal.

20200104_201742

The Chicken was a bit on the dry side, but they had such a variety of tasty sauces to cover that up and why go to a Pig Pen for Chicken?! The Ribs and Bun Fyah sauce were fire! *I must say that Bun Fyah sauce was quite similar to Stush in the Bush’s Blow Fyah sauce. The formula to spicy heaven.

Tender, juicy ribs that were definitely some of the best that I’ve ever had, with buttery soft corn muffins that had the right touch of sweet really hit the spot.

The Mac & Cheese needed salt, a sharper cheese or some herbs though. But again, their sauces could help with that. I saw some kids at another table plaster their Mac & Cheese with sauce. The Bourbon sauce was quite good.

The Fries were quite tasty if you need another recommended side option.

Anyhow, Zack’s Smoke Shack is a casual, reasonable, family friendly dining spot that should do well and Suga will return.

Where to Indulge in Juicy Steak before the New Year!

20191231_102015
Sizzling Ribeye Steak recommended for two ($8500JMD): Grilled and served on a sizzling cast iron pan, finished with demi-glaze, truffle butter and mashed potatoes.

Need to indulge in a juicy Ribeye Steak before the New Year? Chef Alex D-Great has left Steak House on the Verandah in Devon House, but not to worry, Chef Jermaine Erskine and his team of two other Chefs have taken over in fine fashion.

I was a bit worried since I was treating my husband for his Birthday dinner on December 3rd, but I had friends who had gone recently and said the standard was still high. I am in total agreement. Service was commendable, the Ribeye that we shared was cooked to order, medium rare perfection and our sautéed Escargot starter in pesto cream and a puff pastry shell was delicious as well.

Suga’s Breakdown

My Aunt, Maxine Spencer visited Barton G for her birthday in August and highly recommended it as a must-stop destination in Miami. From what I saw, I knew I had to visit on my next trip with my husband, Randy.
Epicurean delights were served on eye-popping displays that only added to the enjoyment of the food, great service and ambience. We also had front row seats to see them all come out the kitchen.
We kicked things off with cocktails like no other!
20191022_102622
Stairway to Heaven – Grey Goose Cherry Noir, Godiva White Chocolate Cream, Frangelico
Appetizers
The appetizers were so tasty, you had to worry about space for the entrees!
20191022_102658
Lobster Pop Tarts (USD$29) – Lobster and Fontina Mornay sauce, Flaky Phyllo, Tabasco Hollandaise, Tarragon Aioli
The flavours and textures in the Lobster Pop Tarts were truly a pleasant surprise. There was even a hint of sweet.
20191022_102726
Laughing Bird Popcorn Shrimp (USD$27) – Crispy Rock Shrimp, Sweet & Spicy Chili sauce, Popcorn
The Popcorn Shrimp had the right amount of crisp, complemented well by the sweet and spicy chili sauce.
The tender, juicy delish Sliders almost struck me out! But I wouldn’t allow them to do so. I just had a taste.
20191031_043434
Strike Out Sliders (USD$36) – Wagyu Beef, Gruyere Cheese, Red Onion, Jam, Smoked Ketchup, Garlic Aioli, Black Truffle Brioche

Eye-popping Entrees!

Orange Salmon (USD$39) – Pan Seared Salmon Loin, Garden Patatouille, Roasted Pepper Paint, Herb Pesto, Fennel Chip
20191031_043658
Randy Burgess with his Samurai Tuna (USD$42) – Ahi, Korean spices, Kimchi Risotto Fritters, Sweet Miso Butter, Shishito Peppers
The Ahi Tuna was perfection. Look at those cuts!
I have to confess that we also had the best Lobster Mac and Cheese I have ever tasted. It was divine with huge pieces of Lobster.

20191020_202046.jpg

20191020_201901
I thoroughly enjoyed my Risotto Jambalaya. A burst of different flavours with the best of both worlds, Meat and Seafood. Of course I couldn’t finish it, but I must say that the Okra and Spices were sensational additions to the dish.
20191020_201918
Risotto Jambalaya (USD$35) – Chicken Andouille Sausage, Gulf Shrimp, Arborio Rice, Okra, Cajun Mirepoix, Spices
Did we really have Dessert?! Of course! You cannot pass up on getting the ‘Dolla Dolla Bills Y’all’!

The NEW Reggae Mill Restaurant Offers Authentic Jamaican at Devon House

Last Thursday evening, Suga had the pleasure of attending the official Grand Opening of the Reggae Mill Restaurant at Devon House.

After two and a half years of serving Greek Cuisine at Devon House, familiarly known as Opa, owner, Alexx Antaeus decided to leave it up to his business partner, Orlease King (Jamaican, born and grown) to take over and give Devon House and by extension, Kingston, Jamaica, an authentic Jamaican cuisine restaurant.

The restaurant shares the same space as Opa and the Reggae Mill Bar, but according to Antaeus, the prices for the Reggae Mill Restaurant should be more reasonable to encourage persons to make it their preferred spot for lunch.

Appetizers were offered to guests, giving you a taste of what to expect when you decide to dine at the new, authentic Jamaican dining spot.

Niesha from the Reggae Mill Restaurant serving Ackee and Saltfish on fried, pressed green plantain.

The Ackee and Saltfish on pressed plantain gave persons the option of adding more seasoning or spice. While the tender Pork bites gave you the true Jamaican hit of spice, mixed with a touch of sweet from the sauce.

CPJ had an assortment of wines serving throughout the night and the buffet opened up, treating guests to Rice and peas, Curried Goat, Jerked Chicken, Oxtail and Stew Peas.

Stew Peas, Oxtail, Jerked Chicken, Curried Goat and rice and peas from the buffet at the Reggae Mill Restaurant Launch last Thursday, October 17, 2019.

Suga enjoyed it all. The flavours were balanced and the meats, sourced locally, were well seasoned and juicy to the bone. Orlease did a fantastic job of recreating the meals we grew up enjoying from our kitchens. We all know the home cooked Stew Peas that tied our fathers is not easy to achieve. I am also happy to say in Jamaican words, ‘it neva salt’.

Stew Peas from the Reggae Mill Restaurant!

Well done to Orlease, Alexx and their team. Looking forward to see the Reggae Mill Restaurant maintain a high standard of true, home style Jamaican cooking.

I am also looking forward to trying the Jamaican desserts, in particular, my favourite, the Bread Pudding!

TGIF to Absolutely Scrumptious Donuts from Tea Thyme!

20190905_112450.png
Filled Doughnuts from Tea Thyme ($450JMD each)

TGIF to Tea Thyme’s scrumptious Donuts! Some of you may recognize them from Kingston Night Market, but these sugary treats are now available at The Butcher Block in Manor Park on Saturdays.

Suga loves sugar-filled donuts 😉. I had pre-ordered the Salted Caramel – and Vanilla Cream – filled Donuts after my failed opportunity to purchase the Saturday before. As usual, it did NOT disappoint. I enjoyed the taste, but most of all, the texture. Soft on the outside and fluffy and airy on the inside. Perfection.

The White Chocolate and rose glaze with crushed pistachio is another fave.

‘DONUT’ hesitate to go late or pre-order. You have to stay tuned to Tea Thyme’s and The Butcher Block’s Instagram pages (@hey_its_teathyme / @thebutcherblockja) or communicate with them. They usually arrive at 10:30am/11:00am. They go so fast, The Butcher Block has been increasing their order each week!

Here is the MENU for tomorrow!

Last week Saturday, August 24th, Suga Taster, Stephen Greig had the pleasure of attending The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) Montego Bay Chapter’s Celebration of Fine Jamaican Cuisines on the lawns of the Rose Hall Great House.

The event is also for a worthy cause, as proceeds go toward various Charities in Montego Bay, such as the SOS Children’s Village, Montego Bay Learning Centre and the Save the Child Programme.
The Great House was colourfully lit to enhance the ambience of this elite foodie affair and patrons could get a guided Night tour of the Great House. It is rumoured you have a greater chance of seeing the witch at night!
