A firefighter reported that the entire section of the upper floor of the two-story National Children’s Home was destroyed last Friday, August 9.
The Jamaica National Children’s Home in Papine, St Andrew is a facility that provides care and protection for children rescued from poverty and neglect. It was opened in 1973 as a branch of Britain’s National Children’s Home.
It is unkown how the fire began, but thankfully, of the 38 children housed at the facility, there were no known injuries. The children were between 8 and 17 years old and have been relocated to another facility.
The fire took place just 4 days after caregivers at the Jamaica National Children’s Home participated in a fire drill at the facility. The caregivers were equipped and able to act rationally and quickly when 2 children were asleep while the fire had started. They were able to save their lives.
There have been recent fires at other Children’s homes, so the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) will be inspecting and conducting fire drills at other Children’s Homes soon.
The Children from the home are now in need of clothing items and toiletries as soon as possible.

No one tends to ignore the Elephant in the room, especially when it looks so regal!
‘Regal in the Room’ is part of GW Art’s new Summer Collection and will be at Christmas in July next Thursday, July 18th at The Jamaica Pegasus from 9am to 6pm.
Christmas in July is a Corporate Gift and Souvenir Initiative. Corporate gifting in Jamaica includes gifts at Christmas, gifts at conferences, tokens for promotional activities and much more.
Instead of purchasing corporate gifts from overseas or from local businesses that import items, companies have begun to explore local options. This initiative differentiates their offerings and adds uniqueness and creativity to their gifts, while managing costs.
Get GW Art in your space today and help to Support Local!
Stay tuned for more.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae known to provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting benefits. Lately, it has been popularly used as a dietary supplement.
Spirulina has generally been considered to be safe, however, according to healthline.com, it may have various dangerous side effects as a result of contamination of harmful compounds that can worsen certain health conditions. For instance, if harvested from water polluted by toxins, Spirulina can thin your blood and increase the length of time it takes for blood to clot. Spirulina can also worsen autoimmune conditions such as Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Some persons may be allergic, and those with Phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare inherited condition, should avoid it.
Minor side effects of Spirulina may include nausea, insomnia, and headaches.
Should you stop using Spirulina?
According to healthline.com, if you purchase Spirulina from trusted brands, risk of contamination can be reduced However, there is no guarantee that Spirulina products are 100% contaminant-free.
It is advised to avoid Spirulina if you have a bleeding disorder or are on blood thinners. While some studies suggest that Spirulina does not affect blood clotting time, there is still not enough evidence of its effects on persons who are already taking blood thinners.
It is advised to avoid Spirulina if you have an autoimmune condition, allergies or PKU as well.
***Suga thinks the best precaution is to consult your Doctor if you are unsure whether this supplement is right for you.***
